We went to the Circus!! 7/27/08

We took the kids to the circus the last day they were in town. It was the first circus we had taken any of the kids to!!

<--Alyssa wanted to take this picture outside Reliant Stadium.
Checking out the animals before the show. (There's a hard to see elephant in the background.)

Kate could not believe all the things the acrobats were doing!

But, she loved it!

.
.
Grant thought the dogs were the funniest thing.
Alyssa just shyly watched everything, taking it all in. The main way I could tell she was excited was because her blood glucose numbers shot up. This was one of the girls she liked.

Clark thought the circus was cool, but too long. He was tired and wanted to go to sleep.

(BTW, this was our real view from the circus. We were front row for the pre-circus show, but we actually sat on the very back row for the real circus. Which, honestly, is better than the 2nd to last row... on the back row, you can stand up or sit on your chairs or do whatever!!)

All in All, we were glad that we went. Jason said that he had a lot of fun, too. (Right before he went back to work late Sunday night. But, he took me out for a date Friday night. Which was funny because Grant said, "Why?! You are supposed to go out on one date, get married, and then only go out for your anniversary. You already went out back in May." Hah!Jason also relaxed with some Rock Band and Guitar Hero, so he settled into work at 11pm on Sunday night.)

My favorite part was the 2 rings they run around in at the end. It was awesome!

I think Kate & Grant were the perfect age to go to the circus. They really enjoyed it the most.

Wanted: Has anyone seen our dad?!

I ran across this picture when I was looking for a picture of something else. I thought it was funny. It was one of those impromptu moments where everyone climbed on top and my parents happened to be there with the camera.

Yet, since my husband has been working 80+ hour work weeks this whole summer (remember the post about why we went to San Antonio the week school let out... we left to give him guilt-free overtime working... it hasn't stopped), I thought it was a fitting picture. He's at the bottom of a bunch of fun needy people and we haven't seen him since Christmas... ok, May but it feels like that long. Where's my presents?! OR, his presence?! Hah.

BTW, do you know what it means to be a stay at home mom when your husband works overtime?! YOU work overtime!!! So, I've been working 80+ hour workweeks on top of all the camps and VBS's. That should be me at the bottom of the pile! (But, I'm glad it wasn't... that's a lot of weight on top.)

Anyways, Jason, if you are out there working, I love you and miss you! We hope to see you soon.

What people ask me about: Food Allergies

November 29, 2007: Preliminary Bloodwork on Alyssa came back looking like she had celiac disease.
...
Alyssa was going through a time of having urinary tract infections. She was on her 5th round of antibiotics and kept complaining about her stomach hurting. At first, I thought it wsa just from all those antibiotics, but at a diabetes check-up, I made the endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) test her for celiac (auto-immune disease common in diabetics where the patient is allergic to gluten... gluten is a bi-product of wheat, oats, rye, and barley... so if they have celiac, they can't eat any of these things or anything that has those things in it.).
...
Because of the bloodwork results, the endocrinologist wanted to send me on to the gastroenterologist to see if Alyssa had celiac. That doctor would put her to sleep, scope her, and biopsy her to see if she had celiac. That would be after we could set up an appointment that would occur hopefully within a month or two, but meanwhile, her stomach would still be hurting.
...
I had already set up an appointment with a nutritionist for that Monday, December 3rd because of all those urinary tract infections -- I wanted to see if there was anything I could change in her diet to stop the uti's. The nutritionist recommended taking her off all allergenic foods to see if it would help. So, it would be possible immediate relief, but the only way to test for celiac would be to have her start eating gluten again and be in pain. Both Jason & I decided that the label wasn't worth it. We chose to take her off gluten.
...
We immediately saw her feel better and her diabetic numbers shooting low. Within 1 day, we knocked her insulin down by 60%. By the end of 3 days, it leveled out at 85% of the previous amount. Most likely, that was because her body was not having to work so hard since she was not eating foods she was allergic to.
...
The other part of this was that I did not think we could take Alyssa off of all those foods (gluten, dairy, peanuts, nuts, even beef for a while) by herself, so we took the family off of everything, too. We all started feeling better:
Jason & I lost at least 5 inches off of our waistlines and felt healthier.
Kate started only getting her recurrent urinary tract infections (that she had started having in kindergarten, but really had her first one at 2 months old) when she went to friend's houses and ate whatever food.
Grant started only getting sick 48 hours after being at friend's houses and eating their food. This happened about 3 times, so it was kinda weird. He also stopped sounding so nasal-y all the time.
Alyssa made comments like, "My tummy never hurts anymore, Mommy."
Clark only got a runny nose after eating snacks at school.
...
February 4, 2008: Gradually, though, Alyssa's stomach started hurting at random times. I finally took her to a wholistic doctor who checked her blood levels for anything weird and for food allergies. It turned out that she was highly allergic to gluten, & yeast. But, she was mildly allergic to all grains, all dairy, onions, turkey, eggs, and a few other small things. She was put on supplements to help her body fight back against the food allergies and to balance any areas where her bloodwork showed that she was off.
...
February 29, 2008: I started going crazy trying to guess what the others should or shouldn't eat, so I took the other 3 kids and myself back to that wholistic doctor to check allergies. Here's what we found:
Clark: mildly allergic to quite a few things, so I just limit him at home, but eats whatever when he is out.
Grant: highly allergic to celery, grapes, grapefruit, oranges, eggs, lettuce, avocado, cabbage. He also had mild allergies to quite a few other things... like tomatoes seem to stop up his nose. All I know is that if he stays off these things, he does not sound so congested. So, he was fine to have gluten and dairy, but needed to lay off these other foods.
Kate: only mildly allergic to several foods but very sensitive to the ones she is allergic to. Eggs make her stomach hurt. Gluten gives her urinary tract infections. Same thing for too much fruit of any kind. Pineapple sends her to the pot.
Me: Mildly allergic to a ton of foods. Highly allergic to buckwheat (What's up with that?! I don't eat buckwheat). I also have high allergies to lettuce, spinach, corn, celery, grapefruit, cheddar cheese, beef, pecans, sesame, and potatoes. I noticed small things in the beginning like soy made my nose run, corn syrup gave me a caffeine-feeling headache, potatoes made me grouchy.
...
What does all this mean?! For us, we all went on acidophillus & glutamine & supplements to heal our guts. None of us are anaphylactic when it comes to these allergies, but it was really messing up our insides. The doctor told me that changing my life now really is the same as stopping cancer, blood problems, and all sorts of other issues. I'd felt slightly off balance for a couple of years anyways, so I was listening!
Do I think everyone has food allergies? Probably. How many of us drink a drink or eat a food and then get a headache afterwards, but ignore it. Your body is talking to you, it's just whether you want to listen to it or not. I do think it was easier to figure out for us because we started rotating our allergenic foods so that we didn't eat the same thing more often than once every four days.
...
Food allergies change over time and we are about due to get checked again. Some of it, we are just figuring out by how we feel. Like, Kate, who is the most sensitive one of all of us has noticed that bananas really don't seem to bother her, but pees send her to the pot and white fish hurts her stomach. Those are all new things, but she is listening to her body, so I think she'll be super healthy. Most of the rest of us should be dropping food allergies as our guts get stronger.
...
I've started picking my battles with food. When we are at home, we eat either non-allergenically or we rotate our low allergenic foods. When we are away, I keep to the following:
Me: I eat whatever, but still try to limit potatoes because I don't like feeling grouchy and it really made me grouchy at the beginning. I also lay low on wheat because it makes my back hurt, my face break, and makes me kinda stinky! :)
Kate: Stays off gluten & eggs
Grant: Stays off eggs & grapes (celery, oranges, and grapefruit don't come up that much)
Alyssa: Stays off gluten and yeast
Clark: Eats whatever
...
How has this changed us? Beyond the obvious of what we eat, we are all healthy and aware of what goes into our bodies. I've been blessed by wonderful friends who have helped me figure out what to eat and have been able to help others. I was able to help out at VBS to make sure all the kids with food allergies felt special and their parents got to take a break from worrying about it. I was able to repay Shannon Farrier for helping teach me how to cook this way by helping cook for her son when their house burnt down. (We both wish that I wouldn't have had to help, but what a blessing that I was able to help!!)
...
Do I think it will last forever? I hope not, but I think that at least gluten and eggs will continue to be out. For now, we typically stay off gluten, dairy, eggs, & yeast at the house all the time.
...
We'll see how it goes. I'm just glad that we all feel better for now!

What people ask me about: Diabetes Update

2 Years ago on 7/21/06: Alyssa was diagnosed with diabetes... As I look back through the pictures, I realized that she felt like a princess when she was in the hospital. Honestly, I have pretty much ignored all pictures because I didn't want to look back at this time because I was afraid of bed memories, but all I found were good ones... friends visiting us... having special time alone with Alyssa... she felt so special... it was a hard time, but it answered so many questions as to why Alyssa acted the way she did (throwing fits, peeing all the time, so thirsty all the time, starting to take naps again after she hadn't had naps in years), it all suddenly made sense.

Here, Alyssa learns how to give Amy, her "diabetic" bear, her first shot.

.

.

.

The day we were leaving the hospital, there was a rainbow outside!

.

Last year on 3/30/07: Alyssa goes off of shots and onto the pump. A lot of people ask if the pump is used for people that have diabetes worse than others... the answer to that is NO. The pump is just another way to give insulin besides shots. I, personally, think that it is easier to send Alyssa off to playdates and school with a pump then with shots.

Here is the "infusion site". This pink circle has tubing attached to the pump and a little plastic "cannula" that sticks into her body so that the insulin is still injected... It has to be moved every 2-3 days. We rotate between the arms, stomach, bottom, & leg.
.

Unfortunately, Alyssa still has to prick her finger to see what her blood glucose numbers are. The FDA has just approved a "continuous blood glucose monitoring system" for kids ages 7 and up. But, that's still a few years away, so we have some time before that's an option.

July 24, 2008: These days, Alyssa is a healthy diabetic (& celiac, but that's another post that will come soon). She's able to do anything anyone else can.

I'm torn on whether I like the pump or not. It broke one day and it was horrible not having it. I had to get a loaner pump until the real one came in and it really threw me for a loop. But, her numbers were great on plain old insulin shots. I've also figured out that the pump costs an additional $2000/year on top of the rest of the supplies. I've just found out that there is a Novolog pen that she could probably inject herself... We'll see... all the literature I've read says that the pump is the smartest way to handle insulin. I'm working with a doctor that is on the same pump as her to see if we can pull her numbers down. I don't like how high her numbers have been, but I believe he's working on bringing them down gradually. One of the things I really like about the pump is that it calculates how much insulin is in her system before automatically adjusting for a high number... that would be hard to do by hand. So, we'll see how this journey continues.

Overall, diabetes is going well. I just want to see the numbers come down, but it is a process that we are working on.

Whew!!! Now that we have time to be at home...here's our friends, the Goerlichs

We try to get together with Mari, Finn, Cohen, Sophia, and Noah every week. It is good for everyone. Mari makes me feel normal... she is one of the people in life that is as busy as I am on a regular basis and she still has so much fun with her kids. It is good for my kids to be responsible for younger kids. I hope it is good for her kids to have the interaction. Mari says it is good for her to have others help entertain. No matter what, I love hanging out with them.
...
This picture was from Mari's blog (texasquadruplets.blogspot.com) and was from the 2nd week when we started hangin out. My kids and I helped take care of the kids at the swimming pool so that Mari & Chris could have one on one time with the others.
...
Oh, and Mari was my inspiration for starting a blog. She mentioned hers and I thought...what a good idea... I made it my goal for the summer to put something together by the end of summer. Yeah! I just accomplished a goal!!
...
We love them!!

Neigborhood Get Together (with old & new neighbors) 7/20

Michelle Bellomy won a free Dreyer's ice cream neighborhood party... the only problem was that she sold her house... so we had the party in the block. We ended up just pulling our outside freezer to the front of the garage and serving up there. It was great to see everyone again.

We haven't gotten a chance to know our new neighbors as well since they tend to be working or gone more... it is just different than having 5 families where the moms were around at least part of every year (part days or home during summers, etc.).

VBS - Cy Fair Christian Church 7/14-7/18

I created this video for the PowerLab VBS we did at our church. Our VBS was at night time. It was a lot of fun. I had a lot of technical difficulties, so I didn't have much time to work on the quality of this video, still, I felt like it turned out decent. I used ProShow Gold to create it in.

This week, we also had fun sleepovers:

On Tuesday night, we had a blast with David & Madison Knight... we brought them back in time for VBS on Wednesday night.

(David's mom, Maggie Knight is in the picture with him.)

.
Silly hair was the way to go this week!!

Then, on Thursday, we were able to have the Kidd kids sleep over. Ashley is 13, Coby is 10, Audrey & Christian are 3. We had a lot of fun. I wish I could have played more, but I was trying to work out my technical issues with creating the dvd. Still, for having 8 kids and a busy mom, the place ran amazingly well. We were so glad to have them all here. That night, the meal they served for volunteers included gluten free parts, so we were able to eat dinner there. Apparently, a kid at the table next to ours kept commenting on the bigillion kids that were at our table! Hah! I felt lucky to be with them all and know how excellent they all were!!

Saturday we did NOTHING. Sunday, we had a lot of cleaning to do!!!

Alyssa's Church Camp 7/11-7/12

This camp is created for a parent to go with the child and get used to the campgrounds so that when they go in future years, they will feel comfortable going with others.

It was much easier only having to make 4 gluten free meals at this camp!!!

It was interesting going with a diabetic child to camp. They decided to have smores right before bedtime... I didn't know about that or we would have made some yummy grahamn crackers... so she just ate the marshmallows. So, at bedtime, her numbers were really high. She was thirsty and had to go pee. I felt so bad for everyone else there, but I had to let her take care of the diabetes. I finally got her calmed down to sleep. Then, I checked her in the middle of the night and she was low, so I had to give her sugar. Then, she fell out of bed (another girl had fallen out of bed earlier in the night... at least they were both on the bottom bunks... poor Jo-Jo at Grant's camp fell out of the top bunk). Then, it was time to wake up. But, we had a good time and Alyssa enjoyed her time with me and with her new close friends from church. She especially liked playing tetherball.

Kate's 10th Birthday - July 8

Kate wanted a flowery summer garden party. (Refer back to her Church Camp posting to understand why.) We ended up doing lots of arts & crafts and having a great time. Check out the video for highlights. I learned how to make this video because I needed to make a DVD for VBS at our church. So, I decided to practice with this one.

Meanwhile... back at home July 4th

Jason & the kids enjoyed fireworks and XBOX & Wii while I was gone to Missouri!!

Apparently the kids were cold?! They said they were afraid they would get cold... Grant said he was fine.

Lindsay's Wedding 7/3-7/6

Immediately after camp, we cleaned up clothes and Gichan & I flew to Missouri for Lindsay Mirakian's wedding. I used to babysit Lindsay when she was 1 year old. I also took some time to be a nanny for her family when they were in Germany and the regular nanny was on vacation. Our families are really close family friends, so I really wanted to go.

On the way there, Gichan and I decided to give up our seats on the airlines and fly in a couple of hours later. So, now Jason gets to take a vacation to go see his brother in August for free with the voucher I earned!!

We had a great time at the wedding, but man was I tired when I got home!!

Grant's Summer Camp 6/29-7/2

Grant went off to 2nd & 3rd Grade camp with Jo-Jo & my dad, Gichan. It looks to me like he had fun at recreation time with Jo-Jo in the picture to the left.
One of the favorite things at camp is blobbing as in the pictures above. I just couldn't believe my dad blobbed!! Great job, Jo-Jo of capturing these pictures.

Grant ended up being CAMPER OF THE WEEK!!!! He memorized all of his scripture verses plus 2 extras and was the all around "best boy camper". Awesome job Grant! His prize is a free trip to camp next year! (YEAH for Me!!!!)

New Japanese Friends come 6/28-7/3

Micah (pronounced Mee-ka), Jo-Jo, and Lucah came to visit. Micah made this awesome sushi dinner on the last day she was here!!

...

They were in town visiting my parents and came to Houston to visit. Then, Jo-Jo, my Dad (we call him Gichan), and Grant went off to Church camp... I'll write about that next...

The rest of us stayed and played at water parks and games and such...Oh, and helped my friend Shannon Farrier who unfortunately lost her house due to a fire caused by lightning. See http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=6220516. With my mom & Micah's help, we packed up Coleman (Grant's age) for camp and made food for Clay. (He's 6, on the autism spectrum, and eats on a very specialized diet -- not gluten, dairy, rice, potatoes, etc. Since I now know how to cook like that, I did my best to help out.)

VBS @ Cypress Bible Church June 23-27

This week, we all went to Vacation Bible School at Cypress Bible Church. This is not the church we attend, but we do go to VBS there every year and the older 3 kids went to preschool there. The VBS is always unique and amazing. Penny, who was our neighbor until May of this year, but thankfully still runs the office, is in charge of music and is the one that got us going to this VBS. I decided to volunteer in an easy place... snacks... but quickly became the snack person in charge of food allergies. There were about 25 kids that had food allergies and I made sure they received a non-allergenic snack each day. This is a really fun week and I'm glad we went. After I catch up on this blog more, I'm sure I'll show more personality. Right now, I'm just trying to get things written down. :)

Meanwhile, back at home...June 15-20

This picture is from Grant's crossover to being a Cub Scout Wolf back in May.
...
While Kate & I were at camp, my mom stayed with the other 3 kids and got to experience my very full life. Grant went to cub scout camp from 9am-2pm and had a blast... he enjoyed archery, golf, and eating lunch.
Alyssa & Clark stayed home and played with Nana. I came home to a PILE of library books because she told them they could take as many as they could carry. Apparently, they could carry A LOT!!! Poor Nana was very done by the end of the week... cooking allergy free and dealing with all the diabetic issues is a lot!

Kate's Church Camp June 15-20

Kate with McKenzie Leuschner & their beloved Misty & Christy from camp.
...
Kate & I went to church camp for Sunday- Friday. Last year, she went without me, but this year, I went to help prepare her gluten-free meals. (It was a little overwhelming having to have 20 meals ready to go before the week began, but thankfully, Jason helped!!) She had a blast and didn't seem to mind eating different food too much. She said that reason she didn't mind was because she realizes that sometimes being different than others is better... she could be creating flowers like in this email...
.
An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half Full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. 'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.' The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this Beauty to grace the house.' Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

Summer 2008 began

Summer began and we had 2 weeks before any major events... it should have been a breeze... so we decided to mix things up and go to San Antonio. At least, the 5 of us did... Jason stayed home to work tons of hours "guilt-free" while we played. We spent most of the week with Nana -- she was so awesome -- she cooked allergy free for us and we enjoyed hanging out. We also saw Gchan, Uncle Quinn (& his girlfriend Lauren), Aunt Rachel, Cousin Kendall, and brief glimpses of Uncle Darrin, but didn't take any pictures.

New Blogger

Hi. I decided to create a blog today to try to keep friends and family updated on our lives. I am going to work on updating everyone with the summer events that have taken place so far and then continue with life going forward.

Wish me luck...
